Motorola has never primarily been a major player in the premium segment of smartphones. Besides the Motorola Razr, the company's attempt at a foldable, the company has never been popular among the premium buyers, mainly because of its design. The company has now announced The Edge Plus, a phone with a beautiful, modern design, and top of the line hardware, at a correspondingly high price point of approximately $999. Here we see what the company has to offer, and what we think of the phone.
The new Motorola Edge Plus, a premium flagship device by the company with the latest hardware. It's got all the bells and whistles and is a worthy opponent to the Galaxy S20 and the OnePlus 8 pro.
Design: The Edge Plus comes with a beautiful 6.7 inch Super Amoled display, with a 90Hz refresh rate. It features the popular punch hole camera pushed to the side of the screen. The slim bezels and the edge display makes for a premium looking, futuristic smartphone. It also features a 21:9 aspect ratio, which gives a cinematic experience while watching content. A point to be noted, that this is still a 1080p panel, so yes it isn't super high definition, but nevertheless, it is a beautiful display.
Besides the display, the phone features a glass back and surprisingly, comes with a headphone jack! Sadly, the phone does not have an official IP rating, but the company does claim to have done its own testing for water resistance. Weighing in at 203g, this is one of the more well - weighted phones and all in all calls for an amazing, premium design and build.
Performance and Memory: The Edge Plus comes with the latest Snapdragon 865 processor, which is the top performing chipset on android devices. It comes bundled with the Adreno 650 GPU, which should make for an amazing gaming performance by this device. The phone also comes with 12Gb ram and 256 Gb of internal storage. It comes with the fast UFS 3.0 storage which enables faster read / write speeds. Sadly the phone does not come with a micro- SD card slot.
OS and Customization: The phone comes with android 10 out of the box, and with a stock android experience, along with some of Motorola's own optimizations. For example, the phone, being a relatively tall phone, could get difficult to operate with one hand. To address this issue, Motorola has provided a set of gestures from the Edge of the display to navigate through the screen to some extent. Adding to this, we have the usual options like double chop to activate the flashlight and twist to activate the camera, which are some handy little features. So overall, a great software experience is to be expected.
Cameras: The phone comes with a quad camera set up at the back housing a 108Mp primary camera, along with an 8Mp telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a 16Mp Ultra-wide lens, and an additional
Time Of Flight 3D depth sensor. An important point to note is that the 108 Mp primary lens is not the same which is used in the S20 ultra, rather it is the one used in the Redmi Note 10. On the video recording front, the phone lets you capture 6k videos at 30 fps. which is a different resolution, not commonly seen in many smartphones. Camera performance cannot be determined just based on specifications, so it will be interesting to see how this phone compares against the others out there.
Speakers: The phone comes with dual stereo speakers, and the company claims that these are the loudest speakers on any phone currently. So on the speaker front as well the phone should be performing reasonably well.
Battery: The phone comes with a massive 5000mAh battery, which should very comfortably last you well over one day of heavy usage as well. This is because along with the large battery, the phone also comes with only a 1080p display, which consumes less battery than a QHD+ display. Adding to this, it also has a 90Hz refresh, not as high as 120Hz, and so that too is more battery efficient. Sadly, the phone only supports up to 18W of wired charging, but also has support for 15W of wireless charging and 5W of reverse wireless charging. So yes, the charging speeds are not really great, but we do see a massive battery, which is great.
The Verdict: The Motorola Edge Plus is definitely a very interesting smartphone, and at almost a $1000 price point, competes directly with all other premium flagship smartphones out there. There are places like the speaker performance, OS and UI optimizations, presence of a headphone jack, a beautiful design, and a massive battery which are very attractive offering by the company, whereas certain features like the lack of faster charging, an offical IP rating, a micro SD card slot do seem to take some of the shine away. The cameras also, on paper, don't really feel new or appealing, but we'll have to wait to get an official word on that.
So, this is a great and ambitious attempt by the company, and we'll have to wait and watch how the people respond to this move.
Point to be noted: The phone has just been announced yet, and is expected to be launched around mid May. So specific details and comparisons can happen only after the final product is launched.
