Is this the right time to launch the OnePlus 8 series?

The Coronavirus is all over the news, and it has not left the tech world in peace either. With a hit taken on all major services and product launches, along with the cancellation of major world conferences, it begs the question, is it really the right time to launch the OnePlus 8 series during this time? Here is what we have to say about this.

Well to start off, it is not really a simple Yes or No kind of an answer. The delay of a phone launch has more significance than what may outwardly seem. With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, there is a hit on all kinds of services. People are reluctant to buy basic necessities, let alone thinking of upgrading their phone. Normally, the launch of a phone would have been an elaborate arrangement, with the press and media going berserk trying to get to the launch event, and covering the launch over various platforms. This of-course was not possible this time, and many people felt that they should have waited for services to resume, and people to be able to buy the phone. And they are not wrong to have wanted that.

But then again, we don’t know how long this pandemic is going to last and when a state of normalcy will return. A delay in the launch of the OnePlus 8 series by several months, would mean either a further delay in the 8T series, or perhaps a complete scrap of the 8T all together. Now that is not something which the company would necessarily like to do. The 8T would be another major phone by the company, maybe more so than the 8 series. They get time to analyse their market and know what to change and therefore bring a more refined product to us via their 8T series. Not to mention the fact that places like China are recovering from the disease and might be operational for business quite soon. So there the OnePlus 8 would still generate descent sales. Adding to this is the fact that the OnePlus 8 pro is actually a brilliant smartphone, taking on the likes of the S20 Ultra. This results in increased competition among these companies, and as a result, we the consumers are at a gain in terms of value offered by the next generation line-up by these companies.

So I am guessing that though they have launched the phone, but its availability would still be lower than its older generations. By doing this, they are not putting their future phones in jeopardy nor are they skipping out on the launch of an important product of their lineup. All we can do is speculate, and wait and watch what these companies do.

Here’s to hoping all this mess is cleared soon !

Although the post is written keeping the OnePlus 8 series in mind, the same is valid for other phone companies as well, though not identically, but to a certain extent.

The Future of the Chinese Smartphone Market

With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic taking center-stage, things are not exactly smooth in the tech space too. Many countries are citing "poor Coronavirus transparency" as their reason to drop Chinese products as their vendors, or to stop doing business with them. Here is what we think the future holds for China. Recently UK decided to drop Huawei as their 5G vendor, and expressed a strong wish to cut all ties with the Chinese tech giant, in the foreseeable future. This doesn't come as a surprise, as people around us are mentioning the same thing, to try to reduce their reliance on Chinese products. But it really is easier said than done. Take the smartphone industry for instance. In India, the market share of Chinese smartphones is well above 65% ( source ). These phones primarily target the budget and mid-range sections of the market. India, being a huge market for the budget smartphones, is heavily dependent on these brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Rea...
