Realme Narzo 10... Not really that great.

You might have heard about the new budget offering by Realme, called the Narzo 10. It is apparently meant for all the gamers out there, looking for a budget phone which can run popular heavy games like PUBG and COD. While the phone does kind of do that, but overall it is more of a disappointment considering the other phones out there. Here we discuss why this phone really is not all that appealing.

Starting off, we talk about why this phone is making the news. The company claims this is one of the cheapest gaming phones out there, coming in at Rs 12,000. To back this, they have a Mediatek Helio G80 chipset, which is capable of performing fairly well, especially while gaming, and especially considering the price of the phone. So what really is wrong with the phone?

The biggest problem we have, the display. It comes with a very basic HD+ (720p) display. Now this leads to a noticeable difference as compared to FHD+ (or 1080p). The details, as would be required while playing any heavy game, would simply not be really striking in such a low resolution display. And practically every other good phone over Rs 10,000 is providing at least a FHD+ display, and the fact that realme skimps out on this, is rather disappointing.

Now we move over to the other general reviews, what's good and bad, as compared to the competition. Talking about the build, it comes with a plastic back, which although is pretty durable, is not nearly as premium as the glass back offered on several phones, such as the Redmi Note 8 in this price. The other design aspects are similar, with a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, and the presence of a tear-drop style notch on the front.

Talking about the storage, the phone comes with 4Gb of Ram and 128Gb of internal storage. Now here too, the company has made several compromises. The storage used is the eMMC storage, as compared to the faster UFS 2.1 storage, used by most of the companies in this price range. What this means is that the general read write speeds on this phone will be a bit slower than several others offered in this segment.

The cameras are fairly good, nothing fancy, and nothing too underwhelming. The phone houses a quad camera set up with a primary 48Mp camera, an 8Mp ultra-wide lens, a 2Mp macro lens and a 2Mp B/W sensor. The last two lenses are not really useful, and the main two lenses are descently good for this price. So nothing much to complain about.

The battery is actually the best part about the phone, but again, not really a novelty in the budget segment. The phone comes with a large 5000mAh battery, and comes with an 18W fast charger in the box. Considering that the phone has a rather low resolution, the already large battery should last even longer, and is a great thing to have especially on a smartphone focused on gaming.

Another good thing about this phone is the software. It comes with Android 10 out of the box, but with a custom skin over it, the Realme UI. This UI is although not close to stock, but at this price, all the phones more or less have similar custom UIs. Thankfully, the Realme UI does not bombard us with ads. The Redmi Note 8 pro has a ton of them, and it does get pretty annoying.

So all in all, the phone is really not that great. Being called a gaming phone, it lacks a sharp display, which is as important to gamers as is the processor. Speaking of which, although the G80 processor on this phone is technically very good, and better for gaming, the difference, when compared to the Snapdragon 665, or the Snapdragon 710 is not really that much. The other features of the phones which come with these different chips are much better, and overall make for a better value smartphone than the Narzo.

Other options to consider in this price range is the Redmi Note 8, The Realme 3 pro, The Vivo U20, all of which are similarly priced, and now with several discounts, might be available for even cheaper prices. All of these phones are better, especially the Vivo U20 is pretty impressive at this price.

The Future of the Chinese Smartphone Market

With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic taking center-stage, things are not exactly smooth in the tech space too. Many countries are citing "poor Coronavirus transparency" as their reason to drop Chinese products as their vendors, or to stop doing business with them. Here is what we think the future holds for China. Recently UK decided to drop Huawei as their 5G vendor, and expressed a strong wish to cut all ties with the Chinese tech giant, in the foreseeable future. This doesn't come as a surprise, as people around us are mentioning the same thing, to try to reduce their reliance on Chinese products. But it really is easier said than done. Take the smartphone industry for instance. In India, the market share of Chinese smartphones is well above 65% ( source ). These phones primarily target the budget and mid-range sections of the market. India, being a huge market for the budget smartphones, is heavily dependent on these brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Rea...
