Tecno Camon 15 Premier... The cheapest Pop-Up Phone?

If you have been following smartphones recently, you might have heard of the company Tecno making it big in the news for providing the Pop-Up front camera for possibly the cheapest we have seen so far. In a time when companies which earlier experimented with the motorized camera set-up are ditching it for the punch - hole design, we have the Tecno Camon 15 Premier which is offering the full screen experience for a very affordable price. Here is what we have to say about this phone.

The phone offers some descent specs at a very sweet price. At around Rs 16,000 , this becomes probably the cheapest phone to feature a pop-up style camera. The other specs on this phone too are pretty impressive for the price, although they aren't really anything revolutionary.

The design of the phone is pretty standard, what you would expect from a budget phone at this price. It has a plastic back with a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, and the phone also retains a headphone jack. Sadly the phone does not come with a USB C port, but comes with the more conventional Micro USB port. It has a quad camera set up at the back, and the motorized front camera hidden away when not in use to give an uninterrupted 6.6 inch display in the front. The display is an IPS LCD FHD+ display, with a standard screen refresh rate of 60Hz. It is a dual sim smartphone with a dedicated Micro-SD card slot.

Coming to the performance, the phone comes with a Mediatek Helio P35 chipset, which is based on 12nm process. This of course cannot compete with the more powerful Snapdragon 7- series of processors, but for the price this phone is available at, it is pretty descent and fairly powerful. It comes with 128Gb of storage, along with 6Gb of Ram. The processor will be able to run heavy games like PUBG, COD, etc., although not on high graphics. Overall day to day performance should be fluid and smooth, and you shouldn't be facing issues doing usual tasks.

The cameras are one of the highlights of this phone. It comes with a 64Mp rear primary camera, which takes some highly detailed shots in sufficient lighting conditions, owing to the higher megapixel count. The night mode on this phone is also a big point of advertisement by the company, and is one of the key highlights in the camera department. It can capture some beautiful low light shots and processes them to sufficiently illuminate the target. Other cameras on the rear are a 5Mp wide angle, a 2Mp depth sensor and a VGA lens. These cameras are pretty underwhelming as compared to the primary camera, and essentially do not provide much value.

The front camera is a 32 Mp motorized camera. It captures great detail in sufficient lighting, and in general provides good images. The phone sees utility for a person who does not use the front camera all that much so that they will not have a need to use the motorized mechanism several times.

The phone comes with Android 10, but has a custom UI called HIOS 6.0. It is not close to stock android, but that is to be expected of any phone in this price. The phone also comes with a fairly large 4000mAh battery, although it is nothing impressive, as this is almost a standard among phones in this price, some even providing higher 6000mAh batteries.
Watching videos or content on this phone is an absolute delight, with the full screen display, you have no interruptions in your field of view while watching content. The camera hides away to give a full, clean experience.

Overall, considering pure performance, this phone is fairly good, however there are phones such as the Redmi Note 9 pro which do offer a slightly better performance. However the highlight of this phone is the Pop-Up camera, which makes its first appearance in the budget segment. There is a huge population of people who wanted to experience the Pop-Up design, but earlier the phones were just too expensive for everyone to afford. This company has tried to change that, by keeping the price fairly low, and at the same time, offers some great specs too.
All we can do is wait and watch, to see if this phone becomes a hit in the market and people still love the Pop-Up design.

Realme... A formidable player?

All of us know that Realme has been making some amazing smartphones at some really affordable prices. Their phones have really been the buzz around town, and this growth has boomed quite recently. Here we take a look at this company, and why Realme might be the next big brand to watch out for. A sub-brand of Oppo, Realme started off by launching its first phone, the Realme 1, as recently as May 2018. Instantly it became a rage, and the sales numbers of the company even in its recent years were incredible. The company was started as a rival to the vastly popular and the budget king - Xiaomi. The idea was simple, to offer everything that Xiaomi did, and more at a price point which was just as affordable. The phone was instantly a success. They managed to provide a particularly great camera experience, far better than the ones offered by the rival companies in this segment. This appealed to the young crowd, the main target of this budget category, and the company saw great profits by...

The Future of the Chinese Smartphone Market

With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic taking center-stage, things are not exactly smooth in the tech space too. Many countries are citing "poor Coronavirus transparency" as their reason to drop Chinese products as their vendors, or to stop doing business with them. Here is what we think the future holds for China. Recently UK decided to drop Huawei as their 5G vendor, and expressed a strong wish to cut all ties with the Chinese tech giant, in the foreseeable future. This doesn't come as a surprise, as people around us are mentioning the same thing, to try to reduce their reliance on Chinese products. But it really is easier said than done. Take the smartphone industry for instance. In India, the market share of Chinese smartphones is well above 65% ( source ). These phones primarily target the budget and mid-range sections of the market. India, being a huge market for the budget smartphones, is heavily dependent on these brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Rea...
