Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro... Overpriced?

Xiaomi recently announced the price of its latest Mi 10 pro smartphone. The phone itself is pretty incredible, and offers quite a lot, but the price, is just not justified for a Xiaomi smartphone, and at Rs 50,000 , it goes right against the OnePlus 8 pro, which as you all know, is probably the best Android phone out there. Here is what we have to say about the Mi 10 pro, and why this phone, might not be a good move by the company.

Xiaomi has been known to provide budget friendly smartphones, basically whatever they had to offer, would perform really well, but owing to a less optimal UI and weaker cameras, and basic refinements, they were able to keep the prices really low, and that would appeal to the masses. For example, the Poco F1. Although not "Xiaomi", but Poco is a sub brand of the same, so the core principal remains. They were able to price it so very low, and it had the latest flagship processor at the time. Now the Mi 10 pro, offers something similar, but a more premium experience of the traditional Poco F1, but they are charging almost double for the same.

To start off, we have the display. It is a 6.67 inch Super Amoled 1080p display, with a curved edge and a punch hole design. It has a screen refresh of 90Hz and it is protected by Gorilla glass 5. It is a beautiful display, no doubt, but it is a 1080p panel, and it doesn't have a 120Hz refresh. Not very significant factors, but yes it is important to point them out.

Talking about the build of the phone, the phone is backed by a glass panel. The phone also is missing the headphone jack and the micro sd card slot. All of these features are identical to the OnePlus 8 pro.

The performance is also similar, with the core specs remaining the same. It has the latest beast, the Snapdragon 865 processor, with the famous Adreno 650 GPU. The base model comes with 8Gb of Ram and 256Gb of internal storage, extending all the way up to 12 + 512. The phone obviously uses the fast UFS 3.0 storage option, which enables faster read/write speeds.

The UI is probably the most disappointing factor of the phone. The phone comes with the latest android 10, but on top of that it has its own skin, the Mi UI 11. The UI comes with a lot of bloatware, and it also features many ads. This takes away from the premium experience and the higher price we pay to get the phone. In my opinion, the worst feature of this phone is the UI, and considering the competition, OnePlus offers the Oxygen OS, which is far better than MIUI 11.

On the cameras front, the phone comes with a quad camera setup, with a 108Mp primary camera, along with dual telephoto lenses at 12 and 8 Mp, and a wide angle lens at 20Mp. The camera performance from this phone is expected to be pretty  impressive, and something similar to what the competition has to offer. The front camera is a 20Mp single camera, which also takes impressive shots.

Talking about the battery, it has a 4500Mah battery, and comes with a 50W wired charger, for some really fast charging. Having a 1080p panel and a lower 90Hz refresh rate, we can expect some great battery life from the phone too. Also, if you prefer to use wireless charging, the phone also offers a fast 30W wireless charging option.

So here we go, the phone offers some really good specs, but the price is not really ideal. At around 52,000 , it goes head on against the OnePlus 8 pro, which is available for Rs. 55,000. As I mentioed, the basic specs of the phone are pretty much the same, with a slightly improved battery. Meanwhile, on the OnePlus 8 pro, you get a sharper, more fluid display, and the much better Oxygen OS in place of the MIUI. The people looking for a phone in this price are looking for a premium option, with a premium look and feel, and sadly, the Mi10 pro doesn't seem to quite qualify for it.
Therefore, this phone might not be a worthy rival to the 8 pro, and it might not do as well as the 8 pro, in my opinion.

The Future of the Chinese Smartphone Market

With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic taking center-stage, things are not exactly smooth in the tech space too. Many countries are citing "poor Coronavirus transparency" as their reason to drop Chinese products as their vendors, or to stop doing business with them. Here is what we think the future holds for China. Recently UK decided to drop Huawei as their 5G vendor, and expressed a strong wish to cut all ties with the Chinese tech giant, in the foreseeable future. This doesn't come as a surprise, as people around us are mentioning the same thing, to try to reduce their reliance on Chinese products. But it really is easier said than done. Take the smartphone industry for instance. In India, the market share of Chinese smartphones is well above 65% ( source ). These phones primarily target the budget and mid-range sections of the market. India, being a huge market for the budget smartphones, is heavily dependent on these brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Rea...
