The OnePlus 8 vs The Samsung Galaxy S20... Thoughts

With OnePlus, launching the cheaper version of its lineup, the OnePlus 8, it begs the question, how does it fare against the Samsung Galaxy S20? Of-course, strictly comparing prices, the s20 is a lot more expensive than the OnePlus 8, but there is more to these phones than just that.
Here we shall see a detailed comparison, comparing all the major features of both the phones, and my thoughts on these devices.

  1.  Design and build: Both these phones are amazing in terms of their look and feel. They come with a beautiful design, featuring the punch hole camera, although in different locations. Both come with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 at the front and back. The S20 is the lighter of the two phones, and more comfortable in the hands. Also the S20 comes with an IP68 water and dust resistance, whereas the OnePlus 8 does not. Interesting point to note here, the OnePlus 8 actually is water resistant, as claimed by the company, however it has not received an official rating.
  2.  Display: This is the place where the S20 beats the 8 by a considerable margin. The S20 has a QHD+ display (at 60Hz) and FHD+ (at 120 Hz), whereas with the 8 we just get FHD+ at 90Hz. This amounts to a much smoother, and high resolution media consumption on the S20.
  3. Processor: Both these phones come with the Snapdragon 865, so top notch performance is a given. However, the S20 does ship with the Exynos 990 in many markets. As you may have heard, this chip has a few flaws, and is not really the best performer, though it is right up there. All in all, in India, you will find that the 8 will perform a bit better than the S20, but the difference is not really that staggering.
  4. Cameras: This is yet another feature, which is a clear win for the S20. It houses a triple camera setup, with a 12Mp primary, an insane 64Mp telephoto and a great 12 Mp ultra wide lens. Compare this to the 48MP primary, 16Mp ultrawide and a 2Mp macro on the OnePlus 8 and it is evident that this phone doesn't really stand a chance. The versatility offered by the S20 is just amazing, with real strong focus given to the zoom capabilities. Yes, the 8 does offer good cameras for its price, but thats where it ends, the s20 has a better camera setup, for sure.
  5. Battery: This is a place where the OnePlus 8 outshines the S20. It comes with a 4300mAh cell, when compared to the 4000mAh on the S20. This translates to more screen on time from the 8 and should comfortably last you well over a day even with fairly heavy usage. The S20 also should typically last you around a day, just maybe not as much as the 8. The S20 comes with a 25W charger while the 8 comes with a 30W charger. Both of these are really fast chargers, and will charge your phone to a 100% in a little over an hour. One point to note here, that the S20 does come with wireless charging while the OnePlus 8 does not, so that is one thing you may want to keep in mind if you use wireless charging.
  6. OS: Both these phones come with Android 10, with Oxygen OS on the OnePlus and One UI 2.0 on the S20. Oxygen OS gives you an experience more close to stock android while the custom One UI 2.0 is loaded with features and subtle improvements. I personally am a fan of the One UI 2.0, now with the new optimizations and more streamlined Software Updates. But even Oxygen OS has its plus points, and OnePlus has been famous for providing incredibly fast software updates. So either way, you shall not be disappointed
  7. Storage: The OnePlus 8 comes with 8+128 or 12+256 storage options, whereas the S20 comes with 8+128 only. Another point to note is that the OnePlus does not offer expandable storage whereas the S20 provides a micro SD card slot upto 1TB. So both are slightly different, it comes down to how much storage you require.
These were some of the main points differences between the OnePlus 8 and the Galaxy S20. In my opinion, yes, the S20 is more expensive, and significantly more, but it also brings a lot more to the table, in terms of better cameras, display, and build quality, along with wireless charging and an official IP rating. Not only that, it is a true flagship, and is significantly better than the OnePlus 8.

The OnePlus 8, at Rs. 42,000 is just not worth that price in my opinion. The OnePlus 7t, now with a price cut should be available at somewhere around Rs32,000-35,000 and at that price, is still one of the best phones to go for in this segment. Check out the detailed analysis, comparing the OnePlus 8 to the OnePlus 7t here.
Also, if you plan on buying the S20, do consider the OnePlus 8 pro, which in my opinion is the best android phone in the market right now, taking on even the beastly S20 Ultra. Check the detailed review here.

The Future of the Chinese Smartphone Market

With the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic taking center-stage, things are not exactly smooth in the tech space too. Many countries are citing "poor Coronavirus transparency" as their reason to drop Chinese products as their vendors, or to stop doing business with them. Here is what we think the future holds for China. Recently UK decided to drop Huawei as their 5G vendor, and expressed a strong wish to cut all ties with the Chinese tech giant, in the foreseeable future. This doesn't come as a surprise, as people around us are mentioning the same thing, to try to reduce their reliance on Chinese products. But it really is easier said than done. Take the smartphone industry for instance. In India, the market share of Chinese smartphones is well above 65% ( source ). These phones primarily target the budget and mid-range sections of the market. India, being a huge market for the budget smartphones, is heavily dependent on these brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Rea...
